Ingenjör 4.0

Ingenjör 4.0 is a unique initiative to develop modules with “topical” content that responds to the rapid ongoing digitalization of industry, often called Industry 4.0 or the fourth industrial revolution.

In order for the Swedish manufacturing industry to maintain its strength and edge in the use of digital technology and in research, a comprehensive, national, range of qualified courses with applications in digitalization for the industry is essential. Today, large resources are invested within and outside the EU to raise the level of knowledge in the industry in order to take advantage of the opportunities to introduce so-called Cyber-physical production systems to create a sustainable and “connected” industry. One of the key prerequisites is a “properly” trained workforce. The challenge is to get the right person, in the right place, at the right time, and the competition for competence is global. At the same time, Sweden is facing increasing challenges for the industry’s supply of skills.

Almost regardless of industry or task, skills are needed to use digital tools and services. Technology development in industry in areas such as robotics, automation and additive manufacturing requires new production skills. Technological development in the IT area drives the need for completely new cutting-edge skills in, for example, analysis of big data in order to be able to utilize the opportunities for value creation from vast manufacturing and product data volumes that today are growing explosively.

To size the educational challenge, a collection of short modules are introduced by Swedish Universities in areas central to the ongoing digitalization of the manufacturing industry. A first wave of modules were industrially tested in June-September 2020 and since then several additional modules have been launched.

Who is Ingenjör 4.0 for?

The initiative is aimed primarily at employees in the industry with an engineering background, but also at other professions such as operators, technicians, management etc. with an interest in smart and connected manufacturing – Industry 4.0.

In which language is the training?

The education is conducted in english.

Estimated workload and educational setup

Each module is estimated to take about 4 hours per week over 5 weeks to complete – spent in most parts at the learner’s convenience, and in some parts in coordination with co-learners. For each completed module, a Certificate is awarded. The modules are led by prominent teachers from Swedish Universities and follow clear learning paths with time estimations of each chapter. To facilitate learning, a variety of learning activities are offered:

  • Recorded lectures and additional materials – to introduce topics.
  • Summaries – to emphasize content highlights.
  • Quizzes – to self-monitor learning progression.
  • Reflections – to connect with previous experience.
  • Exercises – to transform gained knowledge into practice.
  • Webinars – to engage in deeper discussions on selected topics, together with teachers and co-learners. The webinars are essential to our pedagogical concept!
  • Supplementary reading – to facilitate further studies
